  • HIV Care

HIV Treatment in Cologne – Modern HIV Therapy at SEGE Cologne

The treatment of HIV has undergone fundamental changes in recent decades. Thanks to modern medical therapies, HIV infection is now highly treatable. With effective therapy, people living with HIV can achieve a near-normal life expectancy and a high quality of life. At SEGE Cologne, we provide comprehensive care for people with HIV—from diagnosis and individualized treatment planning to long-term medical support. Our goal is modern, evidence-based, and discrimination sensitive HIV care, where medical expertise and respectful interaction are central.

What does an HIV infection mean today?
HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) attacks certain cells of the immune system. Without treatment, the immune system can become weakened over time. However, modern therapies prevent the virus from continuing to multiply in the body. With effective treatment, the viral load can be permanently reduced below the detection limit. This protects the immune system, and at the same time, the principle applies:
    U = U – Undetectable = Untransmittable.
If HIV is undetectable in the blood, the virus is not transmitted during sex. This discovery has transformed HIV medicine worldwide and enables people living with HIV to lead self-determined lives.

Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) – The Standard of Care for HIV Treatment
The foundation of HIV treatment is antiretroviral therapy (ART). This involves the use of medications that block various stages of viral replication. Modern HIV therapy is generally: highly effective, well-tolerated, safe in the long term and easy to take (often just one tablet per day). Treatment is tailored individually to each person. In doing so, we take into account, among other things: comorbidities, potential medication interactions, life situation and preferences and viral resistance tests. Our goal is a treatment that is medically ideal while also fitting well into daily life.

    Tablet-based HIV therapy.
The most common form of treatment is daily tablet therapy. Modern combination drugs contain multiple active ingredients in a single tablet, enabling simple and reliable treatment. These medications effectively prevent the virus from replicating and stabilize the immune system. Many patients achieve an undetectable viral load in just a few months after starting therapy.

    Long-acting HIV therapy: Injectables
In addition to pills, there are now also long-acting injectable HIV therapies (injectables). These involve administering certain antiretroviral medications via injection at regular intervals—usually every one to two months. Advantages of this treatment option may include: no need to take pills daily, consistent drug levels, high treatment adherence, and greater discretion in daily life. This therapy is particularly suitable for people whose HIV is already stably under control and who are looking for an alternative to daily medication. We will determine together during a personal consultation whether long-acting HIV therapy with injectables is appropriate for you.

    Regular check-ups and long-term support:
Successful HIV therapy involves not only taking medication but also ongoing medical support. During our HIV clinic visits, we regularly perform the following:
    - Viral load monitoring
    - CD4 cell count
    - Checking for possible side effects
    - Screening for other infections
    - Counseling on sexual health and prevention
    - These regular check-ups ensure that the treatment remains effective in the long term.

    HIV and Sexual Health:
Care for people living with HIV often includes other aspects of sexual health. These include, among other things:
    - Testing for sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
    - Counseling on safer sex
    - Vaccinations (e.g., hepatitis, HPV)
    - Support with questions regarding relationships and sexuality

At SEGE Cologne, we combine infectious disease medicine, primary care, and sexual health under one roof to provide comprehensive care.

  • Hepatitis & Other Infections

Hepatitis Treatment and Infections – Infectious Disease Care in Cologne

In addition to HIV care, at SEGE Cologne we also treat viral hepatitis and other infectious diseases. During our infectious disease consultations, we diagnose and treat hepatitis A, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C, as well as other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Our goal is early diagnosis, modern treatment, and long-term medical care. Thanks to modern medications, many infections can now be treated very effectively—and in some cases, even completely cured.

Hepatitis Diagnosis and Treatment in Cologne
Viral hepatitis is one of the most common infectious diseases worldwide. Hepatitis B and hepatitis C in particular, can become chronic and cause long-term liver damage. At our practice, we offer comprehensive hepatitis diagnostics and treatment in Cologne.
    This includes:
    - Blood tests for hepatitis viruses
    - Ultrasound examinations of the liver
    - Follow-up care for chronic hepatitis
    - Counseling on vaccinations and prevention
    - Modern drug therapies

Treatment options have improved significantly in recent years, particularly for hepatitis C. Today, modern antiviral medications can lead to a complete cure of the infection in most cases. Effective treatments are also available for chronic hepatitis B that can control viral replication and protect the liver on the long term.

Testing for Hepatitis and Sexually Transmitted Infections
Many infections initially cause no symptoms or only nonspecific symptoms. That is why regular testing is so important—especially for people at increased risk of sexually transmitted infections. At our practice, we offer comprehensive STI screenings in Cologne.
We test for, among other things:
    - HIV
    - Syphilis
    - Hepatitis A, B, and C
    - Chlamydia
    - Gonorrhea

Regular testing enables early treatment and prevents long-term health consequences.

    Comprehensive Infectious Disease Care
For us, infectious disease medicine means more than just treating individual illnesses. During our infectious disease consultations, we also provide advice on:
    - Vaccinations (e.g., hepatitis vaccinations)
    - Prevention of sexually transmitted infections
    - HIV PrEP and HIV PEP
    - Mecication interactions
